'Guts, Glory, Ram'? For Florida ATM-boosting gang, not so much

May 11, 2012

It was "Ram-Tough" luck for a group of ATM thieves whose own MO tripped them up in a sting operation last Saturday night.

Since early March, thieves in Jacksonville, Fla., had boosted 10 ATMs from convenience stores, said a report at Jacksonville.com. Each theft followed the same modus operandi: Perpetrators used tow straps and a stolen vehicle to pull the machine off its moorings and drag it out of the store.

Police asked crime analysts to determine what type of vehicle the thieves were most likely to use and from what location they were most likely to steal it. Based on this information, they parked a 2000 Dodge Ram truck in a medical center parking lot.

True to form, two thieves took the vehicle and then took out a grocery store ATM with it, the report said. Police chased down the pair, fishing one of them out of the river. A female associate of the two was picked up a few hours later while allegedly driving drunk in a Honda.

The fourth member of the gang has been identified and is being sought by police, the news story said.
