GFG signs mobile-payments deal in Asia

June 20, 2006

MANILA, Philippines - New Zealand-based GFG Group has signed a reseller agreement for its mobile-payments solution, GFG:Mobile, with Philippines-based Infocom, a subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, PLDT.

According to a news release, Infocom will sell GFG:Mobile throughout Southeast Asia.

"Infocom started life providing prepaid Internet services, but advances in wired and wireless broadband technology mean Philippine households now pay less than (U.S.) $15 per month for broadband Internet access," GFG Group's Philippines country manager, Roy Ebora, said. "This has made it more economical to move to broadband, which has slowed demand for prepaid services."

An estimated 50 percent of the Philippines' 80 million people own mobile phones.
