First Data enters global partnership for mobile payments

March 15, 2007

LONDON - First Data International has partnered with network and communication service Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG (NCS), a mobile-payment provider, to offer mobile-payment and e-commerce services to merchants and consumers throughout the world.

According to a news release the joint service, named Crandy, provides a ready-to-use solution for any vendor that wants to accept mobile payments.

The solution serves 360,000 consumers in four European countries; it also provides merchants with a mobile-payment system for handling micro-payments. The service allows consumers to make cashless micro-payments anytime, anywhere for on-street, mobile and Internet transactions (including person-to-person payments), using their mobile handsets. Once accounts are activated, consumers can purchase a service, product or transfer money via a mobile text message or interactive voice response, which authorizes payments.

"First Data is proud to offer innovative mobile-payment services to our banking and merchant customers around the world," said Francisco Lorca, managing director of First Data International. "The partnership with NCS further positions First Data as a leading provider of mobile-payments services. We look forward to bringing our combined knowledge and expertise to this growing market."

Banks and other issuers also can offer services to merchants and consumers through a "white-labeled" agreement, while the technology and processing are provided through a managed service.
