EMVCo publishes updated guide to EMV chip technology

The guide summarizes implementation considerations for issuers, acquirers and merchants, as well as the responsibilities of EMVCo.

EMVCo has released an updated version of its free publication, "A Guide to EMV Chip Technology," which provides an introduction to EMV specifications, processes and the role of the technology within the wider payments industry.

The guide summarizes implementation considerations for issuers, acquirers and merchants, as well as the responsibilities of EMVCo and its ongoing activity to advance the technology, the organization's website says.

According to the introduction in the guide:

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the specifications and processes related to EMV chip products and transactions. The document is intended to describe the "what" and the "why" of EMV chip technology within the context of the wider payments industry.

Additionally, the document describes the role of EMVCo, and how various payment industry stakeholders may interact with EMVCo to participate in the ongoing management of the various EMV Specifications.

The document was first published in 2011, and this current version (released in 2014) has been updated to focus on the EMV Chip specifications, as well as reflect the growing ownership of EMVCo.
