Diebold deal with Saudi Arabian bank takes biometrics to region's ATMs

May 2, 2006

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Al Rajhi Bank, one of the largest financial institutions in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, purchased 240 Opteva ATMsthrough Diebold Inc. business partner Alhamrani Universal Company Ltd.

According to a news release, Diebold's Agilis software will enable the integration of biometric technology in Opteva terminals purchased by the bank. The software interfaces with a variety of multivendor products to provide flexibility and protect investments in legacy systems. Customers will have the ability to conduct transactions on biometric ATMs.

Thirty-seven advanced-function Opteva terminals also will replace Diebold's legacy i and ix-Series terminals in the bank's branches and off-site locations. The upgrade adds advanced functionality, including bulk-note acceptance and intelligent-depository modules.

Diebold Professional Services also will manage the implementation of 82 biometric terminals for government use. The units will be deployed at Social Security offices throughout Saudi Arabia, allowing 400,000 retirees to use their fingers in conjunction with a magnetic-stripe card to access monthly retirement payments.

The biometric technology replaces the use of PINs for the authentication.
