Community banks embracing branch reinvention, too

November 7, 2013

Major U.S. banks have been engaged in branch reinvention for a few years. Now smaller players are beginning to embrace the trend, as well.

First Citizens National Bank, a community bank with $1.2 billion in assets and 17 branches throughout Tennessee, is implementing a branch transformation strategy — with help from Diebold Inc. — that will combine self-service and personalized interactions throughout the branch network.

Working with Diebold Advisory Services, FCNB is introducing deposit automation and teller automation capabilities in branches, and is also implementing the new Opteva Branch Performance Series in-lobby teller terminal.

"Across our enterprise we're investigating new branch layouts and technologies that will improve efficiencies for our customers, as well as our operations," said Judy Long, EVP and COO of FCNB in a news release about the upgade.

"For example, our new Jackson branch will give customers choices for managing deposits and advanced transactions on their own, enabling them to move through the branch quickly and create opportunities for our associates to interact with customers to help meet their financial needs."

Automating transactions will allow FCNB to reduce teller-assisted transactions and reposition its branches as sales and advisory centers, according to a news release.

Self-service deposit automation technology drives transactions to terminals where customers can make envelope-free cash and check deposits, while the Diebold 228 Express Cash Recycler automatically validates, sorts and denominates notes for tellers and reuses them for future withdrawals. Both technologies will reduce demands on FCNB staff, freeing up more time for them to build customer relationships.

"As part of its branch transformation strategy, we're helping FCNB redesign branch traffic flows, right-size larger branches, reduce teller areas, and leverage technology to create a more engaging customer experience," said Mychal Kempt, VP of North America operations at Diebold. "FCNB has begun this process for a number of branches, and the bank is eager to implement the technologies planned."
