Card use picks up in Australia, but cash still dominates most transactions

WA Today (Australia):Australia remains a cash-based society but the use of plastic credit and debit cards is growing. A Reserve Bank of Australia study of consumer payment behavior found that cash accounts for 70 percent of all transactions, while EFTPOS and MasterCard and Visa debit card payments make up 15 percent. MasterCard and Visa credit card transactions make up 9 percent and American Express and Diners Club cards make up 1 percent. Cash is overwhelmingly used for low-value payments, those less than $10, and for 75 percent of payments between $11 and $25 for items such as take-away food and bar bills.
