Starting this spring, Canadian credit unions will offer their members a new mobile payment service using Interac Flash, a contactless technology from Canada's national debit network.

According to a press release, CU members will be able to use supported smartphones to make purchases directly from their savings or checking accounts at retailers displaying the Interac Flash logo.

"The Mobile Pay service will be an easy-to-use, convenient method of giving credit union members the option of purchasing on the go using their supporting smartphones instead of debit cards," said Martha Durdin, president and CEO of the Canadian Credit Union Association.

"It is also another great example of how credit unions are using technology by working with industry leaders to make financial transactions easier."

Four CUs will initially launch the service. These include Affinity Credit Union in Saskatchewan; Conexus Credit Union in Saskatchewan; First West Credit Union in British Columbia; and Meridian in Ontario.

Additional credit unions will introduce the service throughout the year, according to the release.
