Before U.S. Thanksgiving, Diebold lands another big ATM deal in Turkey

November 16, 2010

Diebold Inc.'s decision to open an office to serve Turkey's fast-growing ATM market has paid off again.

The North Canton, Ohio-based ATM manufacturer today announced that it reached an agreement to sell Opteva ATMs and software to Posta Telgraf Teskilati, General Directorate of Turkish Post (PTT). The organization is Turkey's publicly owned post office.

Istantbul-based PTT is purchasing 830 intelligent deposit ATMs. The multi-functional machines are equipped with coin dispensers, and the ATMs accept cash deposits. Users can pay their bills at the machines. PTT also purchased customized Agilis software from Diebold to operate the machines.

Diebold will deploy 200 of the machines this year. The balance of the ATMs will be installed in the first quarter of next year. The agreement's purchase terms were not disclosed.

PTT purchased the ATMs to expand its existing network, said Osman Tural, the company's chairman of the board and general director.

"Currently we have 202 ATMs in service and within the agreement made with Diebold the number of our ATMs in service will be increased to 1,030 by the end of the first quarter of 2011," Tural said. "This project will offer our customers non-stop PTT services."

Established on Oct. 23, 1840, PTT's purpose was to satisfy the postal needs of the Ottoman Empire and of foreigners. The company has 4,059 offices nationwide.

This is Diebold's second major contract in Turkey since the manufacturer opened a seven-person, direct sales office in October 2009.

In September, Diebold announced that Vakifbank, which is based in Istanbul, purchased 575 Opteva ATMs.
