Bebe Stores Inc. confirms payment card data breach

An undisclosed number of records was stolen from customers who used their bankcards at the retail chain's POS terminals between Nov. 8 and Nov. 26.

Women's apparel retailer Bebe Stores Inc. on Friday confirmed reports of "suspicious activity" on computers that operate the payment processing system for its stores. In a news release, the company said it had worked with a computer security firm to shut down the attack.

Bebe said the attack apparently was limited to data from payment cards swiped in its U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands stores Nov. 8–26, and that compromised data might have included cardholder name, account number, expiration date, and verification code. The company did not disclose in the release the number of customer accounts that might have been affected by the breach.

Purchases made through the company's Web and mobile portals, and those made in its international stores (including Canada) were not affected, the company said.

"Our relationship with our customers is of the highest priority and we recognize the importance of protecting their information," said Bebe CEO Jim Wiggett. "We moved quickly to block this attack and have taken steps to further enhance our security measures."
