Bank of Ireland to drop some ATM functionalities in push to digital channels

March 1, 2019

The Bank of Ireland will eliminate bank account statement printing, bill payment and mobile phone top-up at the ATM as of May 11, as part of a digital push to include the release of a revamped mobile banking app later this year.

According to a report by Irish Times, functionalities removed from the bank's ATMs will still be available online and through the FI's mobile app. In an annual report released this week, the bank said that activity on its mobile app increased 25 percent from 2017 to 2018, and that the app logs an average of 10 million monthly engagements. Further, 8 in 10 accountholders are active on one of the bank's digital channels.

Irish Times also reported that Bank of Ireland has begun the process of replacing ATM-only cards with Visa debit cards for all accountholders over the age of 14. The move will double the amount that cardholders pay in an annual stamp duty levy, which will increase from 2.5 euros ($2.85) to 5 euros.
