Australians flocked to ATMs on April 28 as part of a protest called Cash Out Day. This is part of a protest against a cashless trend in Australia, according to a report by News.com.au.
"This is just an easy way for consumers to send a message to the banks that we have a right to access our money in our local community," Jason Bryce, founder of Cash Welcome, said to NewsWire.
Normally, around 900,000 people make an ATM withdrawal every day in Australia. Bryce hopes that this event will double that figure to around 1.8 million.
Cash usage has been increasing in Australia, with about 15% of transactions made in cash in 2025, up from 13% in 2023. In addition, almost half of Australians use cash for a purchase once a week.
As part of this event, National Australia Bank announced it is upgrading its network of ATMs to Diebold Nixdorf's Smart ATM.
