The ATM ecosystem sits at several crossroads. With the end of support for Windows 10, many operators are playing catch-up to get all of their ATMs up to speed on the OS level. This isn't just an operational issue, as an end to security support will leave ATMs vulnerable, which is an especially big issue with the explosion of jackpotting incidents in the U.S.

Amid these concerns, there are also changing customer expectations surrounding self-service experiences and the rise of AI tools. ATM operators that will rise to the top don't just need to handle current issues, they must also prep for the next wave of transformation driven by new standards, tools and technologies. ATM Marketplace provided guidance on this transformation via a webinar hosted alongside Brinks, a major player in the ATM industry.

Bradley Cooper, editor of ATM Marketplace, moderated the discussion with panelists Lonnie Talbert, president of ATMIA, Nathan Wald, VP of global ATM product team, Brinks, Wes Armentrout, senior director of product solution engineering, Hyosung America and Kit Patterson, senior software architect and security expert, KAL ATM Software.

The panelists discussed the ways that the ATM industry is out of sync with changing trends, and how many are lagging behind on the regulatory standards and industry collaboration. They answered key questions that are top of mind for the industry, including:

  • What's the biggest opportunity to drive efficiency?
  • What ATM features have gone from optional to essential?
  • How should operators future-proof their machines?
  • What are the biggest vulnerabilities?
  • What's one big ATM security misconception?

When asked what was out of sync with the ATM ecosystem of today, Talbert pointed to how much of the ATM industry is still running behind with contactless payments.

"The consumer expects to be able to use that card in that manner in that form at whatever device they're going to, whether it be the gas pump, point of sale or ATM," Talbert said.

Keeping up with this trend is just one challenge the ATM industry is facing. It is also struggling with cash logistics, a point that Wald raised.

"A lot of them are trying different things and trying to determine how do they optimize their ATM channel."

One topic of discussion during the webinar was which tools are transforming from "nice to have" into necessities, such as contactless NFC card readers and TPM chips to store cryptographic keys. Patterson emphasized that rather than playing catch-up with tools like this or security updates, operators and banks should be more proactive about updates, as it is easier to handle it on a regular basis rather than try to catch up all at once.

Patterson said, when you are talking about "security, we're talking about pay now, pay later." If you pay now for security updates, you can potentially avoid expensive issues down the road.
