ATMs most numerous in Asia-Pacific

SINGAPORE -- The Asia-Pacific has the most ATMs in the world, according to an article published by the Associated Press.

The Straits Times newspaper reported that as of 1998 there were 275,007 ATMs -- 34 percent of the world's total.

Western Europe was second with 218,394 or 27 percent, according to the newspaper, while North America ranked third with 214,832 ATMs or 26.8 percent. The figures were based on statistics from Retail Banking Research in Britain.

Japan maintained the world's highest concentration of ATMs with 1,079.7 per million people in 1997. South Korea was second at 791 per million and Spain ranked third with 761.4 per million.

ATMs grew in number globally by 14 percent to approximately 802,000 in 1998, according to the report.
