ATMIA publishes Windows XP risk analysis

January 27, 2014

The ATM Industry Association has released a report that analyzes potential risks arising from ATM operators' failure to upgrade their operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 7 before Microsoft ends its support for the older operating system on April 8.

"Risks of Maintaining Windows XP Platform for ATMs," which is available at no cost to ATMIA members, was produced to help deployers understand the full impact of the operating system, and to recommend steps they might take to mitigate or eliminate end-of-support risk.

"This is the most important change to the global ATM industry in this year and all our members need to read this report to be fully prepared," ATMIA CEO Mike Lee said. "After April 8th, Microsoft will discontinue Windows XP support services, including security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, and online technical content updates. No company can afford to ignore such an important change."

The report was considered necessary after ATMIA conducted an international industry readiness survey last year that showed good awareness of the migration but insufficient readiness for it.
