ATMIA publishes best practices for preventing explosive attacks on ATMs

August 27, 2013

The ATM Industry Association has announced the publication of a best practices manual designed to help ATM owners prevent gas and explosive attacks on their ATMs. ATMIA has also published an accompanying directory of solutions for these types of attacks.

Explosive attacks on ATMs are a growing concern globally — and particularly in Europe. The use of explosives, predominantly combustible gas and with a proportional migration to solid explosives, is a recognized trend for the ATM industry in Europe.

In April 2013, with attacks at serious levels in seven European countries, the ATMIA in Europe formed a special task force on ATM gas and explosive attacks. The task force commissioned from its steering committee a set of best practices for the prevention of attacks and a directory of specialist solutions providers for operators in Europe.

"To combat the current rise in gas and explosive attacks in several European countries, the ATM industry and law enforcement have got together to plan a counter-strategy which is working well," said ATMIA CEO Mike Lee. "We commend these admirable new security best practices for mitigating the risk of this kind of attack."

The manual includes eight case studies highlighting the industry's response to gas and explosive attacks in six European countries, plus Australia and Brazil. It is now available for ATMIA members to download from the organization's Best Practice Library.

The manual will be launched in French, Portuguese and Spanish at the ATM Security Conference in London, Oct. 22 and 23. The translations were sponsored by Oberthur Cash Protection.
