ATM cash withdrawals reach record highs in UK

October 3, 2011

According to BBC News, more cash was withdrawn from UK ATMs last Friday than on any other day so far this year.  The Link network attributes the jump to the warm weather the country has been experiencing.

About £577m was withdrawn from Link's ATMs, which is the highest amount since Christmas Eve last year, according to the company.

Temperatures in England have hit record highs for October, reaching 29.9C (85.8F).

"The good weather really seems to have encouraged people to withdraw cash in preparation for increased spending over an unusually sunny weekend - confirmation that the right combination of feel good factors can boost short term spending and that cash is a very popular way of paying for these kinds of goods and services," said John Howells, chief executive of Link.

The article stated that there are 64,000 ATMs connected to the Link network in the UK.
