Another Aussie bank goes cardless at the ATM

May 2, 2014

Not to be outdone by its rival Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Australia has announced plans to launch cardless ATM capability. CommBank unveiled its service on Wednesday; Westpac followed suit on Thursday.

According to Australian business publication CIO, the Westpac service launches in July, two months after CommBank's goes live.

Each of the mobile app-based services comes with its own potential point of annoyance for customers.

While the CommBank solution allows the user to set up a transaction entirely within the mobile app, Westpac customers must set up the transaction in the mobile app and then dial up the bank's call center in order to authorize the request. To complete the transaction, the customer must enter both a one-time transaction code and a one-time PIN.

On the other hand, CommBank allows only one cardless withdrawal per day, with an upper limit of $200, while Westpac's service allows up to three withdrawals per day with a limit of $1,000 per day.
