Retail ATM operator Cardtronics Inc. has announced plans to add deposit-taking capability to 2,500 of its Allpoint surcharge-free ATMs in the U.S. by the end of the year, according to a company news release.
The new functionality will allow any accountholder whose bank or credit union belongs to the Allpoint network to deposit checks and cash directly into a deposit-enabled Allpoint ATM — without the need for an envelope or deposit slip.
These customers will see a deposit option on the transaction menu when they insert their card into the ATM. After choosing this option and inserting a check for deposit, the cardholder will see an image of the item on the screen.
The ATM receipt will bear an image of the deposited check. Cardholders who deposit cash will see a tally of banknote denominations on their receipt.
“Allpoint’s surcharge-free ATMs, fixtures in many of America’s most well-known retailers, have always enabled financial institutions to offer their cardholders the convenience of an expanded ATM network without sending their customers to competing financial institution branch locations," Bill Knoll, EVP of the financial institutions products group at Cardtronics, said in the release. "With the introduction of this deposit capability, Allpoint adds even more value to these surcharge-free ATMs, meeting consumers in retail stores that are part of their daily routine.”
Image deposits are currently in testing, with rollout planned for the fourth quarter of 2014, the release said. Cardholders will be able to find deposit-taking ATMs using the Allpoint ATM locator.
