2 NYC ATMs stocked with bogus banknotes

After a few customers received fake notes, Chase bank officials discovered that stacks of counterfeit bills had been loaded into two ATMs in the midtown area of New York City.

Clearly, the forger's plan was not to fool anyone; the fake bills were printed on one side only on ordinary printer paper, said a report in the New York Times. Authorities proceeded on the assumption that the counterfeit notes were the work of the NCR maintenance employee who loaded the machines — and that he substituted the fake notes so that the machine would register a full load of cash.

A couple of the fakes made it through the ATM's counterfeit detector, tipping off bank officials that the theft had occurred. However, most of the fake notes were detected by the machines, which held full canisters of suspect bills.

A total of $110,000 was discovered to be missing from the two ATMs. Also missing is the suspect, who is believed to be in the Dominican Republic, the Times report said.
