In just a few weeks, the financial services and payments industries will gather again for their largest and most extensive event with an ATM focus. The 15th Annual  ATM Industry Association Conference and Expo will open on Feb. 11 with pre-conference workshops, committee meetings, and an evening reception in the exhibit hall.

The last 15 years have seen many events gradually shrink in size and relevance — and others disappear altogether. This conference, however, continues to exhibit strong growth in attendance, as well as a broadening of its subject matter. Compared to the first event in 2000 with only 290 attendees, it's barely recognizable.

The 2014 conference in Orlando is expected to draw more than 1,000 attendees and about 100 exhibitors. Delegates will be able to choose from a recently expanded program that includes five tracks with four concurrent breakout sessions.

Although the call for speakers goes out eight months in advance, the program is always reflective of what's happening in the industry, from the perspective of both issues and technology developments. This 15th anniversary event is no exception. Sessions will address the underbanked, current regulatory challenges, and EMV migration, as well as new technologies for dynamic currency conversion, biometrics, and fraud prevention.

The program is also a prescient indicator of what ATMIA will be focused on in the months ahead. Migration to EMV and Windows 7 migration are business and technological challenges that will have a huge impact on our industry for the next 12 to 18 months.

ATMIA's U.S. EMV migration committee strives to help members keep up to date with a flood of information and activities of industry groups such as the EMV Migration Forum.

Representatives from Microsoft attend most Windows migration committee meetings to aid in collaborative discussions of strategies for dealing with the massive undertaking of migration to Windows 7.

ATMIA continues to play a leadership role in the EMF as a founding member of the ATM working committee and one of its co-chairs. In fact, 29 members of the EMF are also members of ATMIA, and are making major contributions to new resources that will aid ATM operators in implementing EMV.

Several conference sessions (including one workshop) will provide helpful information for understanding what EMV migration is all about, as well as summaries of what has been accomplished so far.

Addressing this year's theme, "Reinventing the ATM," involves much more than looking just at what is happening today on the ATM platform — it involves creative thinking and a strategy to determine what can happen at the ATM in the months and years ahead.

Emerging cardless solutions will not only radically change the consumer experience, but also could be the most disruptive technology the payments industry has seen in many years. A day-long pre-conference workshop will make a deep dive into this topic with industry experts that include NACHA and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Discussions of cardless transactions often go hand-in-hand with those about mobile payments. Although we have yet to see the deployment of contactless, card-based (e.g., NFC) mobile transactions at the ATM in our market, there is no doubt that this is a form factor on the mind of most ATM operators.

Will we see contactless mobile transactions at the ATM in the next few years? Quite possibly — and several conference sessions will touch on this subject.

As an ATM operator, do I need to put a mobile strategy in place now? Yes — and one of the pre-conference workshops will show you how to get started.

In order to learn about one of the most significant developments of the conference, attendees will have to head for the ATMIA booth.

ATMIA will officially launch a new series of e-learning and certification courses for ATM operators and managers. Courses cover responsibilities for ATM operations, ATM operations management, ATM balancing officer, ATM custodian (first line maintenance), and ATM field controller (operations supervisor).

Materials for these courses have been under development for several years and will be available to ATMIA members only. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to get a hands-on introduction to the new learning platform at the ATMIA booth.

This 15th anniversary conference is also taking place at a great venue — the Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Fla. Attendees will have the opportunity to complement their time at the event golfing at some of the best courses in the country, or enjoying five major theme parks, the Kennedy Space Center, deep sea fishing, sunny beaches (both Atlantic and Gulf, about 90 minutes away), and other activities.

We hope you'll join ATMIA for this 15th anniversary event. For more information about the conference — including a detailed agenda and list of exhibitors — please visit the conference website.
