Public anxiety about ATM bombings has resulted in the preemptive removal of hundreds of ATMs from the streets in the Netherlands.
According to a report by Netherland Times, ING has closed more than one-third of its ATMs over the past two years, reducing the total from 508 to 338.
Eight ABN Amro ATMs have been bombed in Amsterdam within the past two months, according to the report. This despite the bank's use of security systems that have prevented thieves from getting any cash from the machines.
Such measures may be having a cumulative effect, though. The number of ATM bombings in the Netherlands fell from 40 in 2017 to 22 in 2018, the report said.
