Wincor Nixdorf to manage Bank of Ireland's off-site network

March 12, 2003

PADERBORN, Germany -- Wincor Nixdorf will set up and run an off-premises network of ATMs for the Bank of Ireland over the next five years.

According to a news release, the 500 ATM rollout began in mid-January and will be completed over the next two years. One hundred new locations will be installed by the end of March.

During the initial stage, more than half of the ATMs will be installed in rural areas, with 20 percent of the machines in areas where cash dispensers are currently up to 20 kilometers (12.42 miles) away.

Under this rollout, Bank of Ireland's ATM network will grow from 546 to 1,046 machines, which will make it the country's number one ATM provider.

Under an agreement with the countrywide independent retail group Musgrave SuperValu-Centra, the Bank of Ireland will be the preferred provider of ATM installations at up to 250 locations.

Last July, Bank of Ireland announced it had partnered with UK-based independent deployer Hanco ATM Systems and planned to install 500 ATMs in retail locations. However, a bank spokeswoman told ATMmarketplace in January that the bank no longer had a relationship with Hanco.

Also in January, Carmel Foley, Ireland's director of consumer affairs, called on Irish banks to provide more ATMs. Foley said that she had been contacted by several independent ATM providers who wanted to install ATMs in Ireland. She said she was opposed to independent operators because her office had no power to regulate their ATM fees.

Bank of Ireland is the first major client for Wincor's Outsourcing Business Unit, which the manufacturer established in January. The unit is equipped to handle asset and location management, operation of self-service systems and management of data centers and networks, according to the release.

Wincor Nixdorf can also provide cash management, transaction management and execution of back-office processes such as complaints processing and logistical processes surrounding the whole issue of retailer dispute management.

The Wincor Nixdorf ProCash 1500 ATMs used in Ireland will be replenished with cash daily by retailers, according to the release.
