Washington woman helps bust skimming gang

April 27, 2012

Maybe she was just mad that they were Bogarting the ATMs.

A Snohomish County, Wash., woman waiting in line at an ATM noticed that the man in front of her was making one large cash transaction after another, each with a different card.

The woman tried another ATM and found the same situation. At which point, she dialed 911 and helped crack what an article in the Seattle Times called "a prolific skimming ring."

The Times reported that three police officers in the area arrested one suspect in the car called in by the woman. A second suspect was picked up by detectives as he tried to leave the area on foot.

Both men were Romanian nationals in the U.S. illegally, The Times reported. Police also recovered evidence of their skimming activity. The arrests led to the unwinding of the skimming ring, which had taken in more than $1 million.
