Visa, U.S. Chamber of Commerce release top five causes of data compromises

CINCINNATI - Visa USA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have released the five leading causes of data breaches, as well as specific prevention strategies for each of the five causes. 

The announcement was made at the final stop of a joint, 12-city data–security tour.

Visa describes in a comprehensive security alert the state of card security, including common fraud techniques, potential areas of weakness by card-accepting merchants, and emerging threats.

 The five leading causes of card-related breaches are:

  • Storing magnetic-stripe data
  • Missing or outdated security
  • Use of vendor-supplied default settings and passwords    
  • SQL injection (unverified user input)
  • Unnecessary and vulnerable services on servers
