UnionPay makes new inroads in North America market

August 18, 2016

China UnionPay continues to gain ground outside of its home country; the company announced this week that its mobile QuickPass solution is now accepted in North American following its adoption by several Canadian merchants.

A press release from UnionPay did not disclose the names of merchants accepting QuickPass, and said only that "restaurants, hotels, retail outlets, supermarkets and convenience stores" will accept transactions from QuickPass chip cards or QuickPass-enabled smartphones.

No signature is needed for QuickPass debit transactions of less than CA$100 ($78); neither PIN nor signature is needed for QuickPass credit card transactions of CA$100 or less.

QuickPass is accepted at more than 7 million point-of-sale terminals worldwide, including 220,000 POS terminals in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Australia.

The UnionPay brand is accepted at more than 85 percent of Canadian ATMs. In addition, more than 70,000 merchants across Canada accept UnionPay cards, and dozens of the local educational institutions support cross-border online tuition payment via UnionPay cards.
