UK pol says IAD-operated ATM should be fee-free

October 29, 2013

In one of the poorest areas of Bristol, England, where retail banks apparently have elected not to deploy their own on-us ATMs, independent deployer Bank Machine installed one of theirs. Now the IAD is being pressured to provide the service free of charge.

According to a report in the Bristol Post, city councilwoman Estelle Tincknell is launching an effort to end the £1.85 ($2.55) fee Bank Machine collects on cash withdrawals. Her campaign follows a Post investigative report last year that said very few on-us ATMs were to be found in hard-up parts of the city.

Tincknell told the Post, "[C]harging nearly two pounds for every £20 or £30 cash withdrawal is unacceptable. How come people in better-off parts of Bristol have access to free ATMs while in Lockleaze people have to pay every time they need some cash?"

The shop where the machine is located reportedly supports the idea of offering the cash machine. Bank Machine told the Post it was "engaging with the client on this matter ... " but declined to comment further.
