U.K. judge sides with bank in ATM case over 'phantom' withdrawals
June 25, 2009
The Register:Halifax, the U.K. retail bank, scored a victory earlier this month in a closely watched so-called "phantom ATM withdrawal" case that put the security of chip and PIN on trial. Halifax customer Alain Job sued the bank after he was held liable for making eight disputed ATM withdrawals from his account in February 2006. Cases over "phantom withdrawals," where money is withdrawn from bank ATMs without the cardholder's permission, are commonplace, even in the United Kingdom, where the use of chip and PIN is well established. Though chip and PIN/EMV technology was supposed to stop the use of cloned cards, at least in UK ATMs, it has not eradicated the problem.
