The local council for North Yorkshire County in England has approved measures designed to mitigate the effects of bank branch closures on residents and businesses in the county's rural areas.
A report by Hambleton Today said the council currently is working to identify locations where ATMs might be placed to ensure continued cash access for community members.
Proposed locations for machines will be shared with Link, the primary ATM network for the U.K., in a document demonstrating evidence of need, the report said.
One councilor told the publication that some of his constituents currently have to drive 30 miles to withdraw cash from an ATM. He said he thought banks had defaulted on their responsibility to provide services to rural residents, particularly those who lack internet access or a vehicle.
