The (San Jose, Calif.) Mercury News: British banks are switching over to a new type of Visa credit card that requires use of a PIN for every transaction. Although British Visa sales terminals are still wired to accept American cards, some merchants aren't aware of that fact. British banks now require all local cardholders to use new chip-and-PIN cards. But those terminals are programmed to recognize and accept the signature-only cards that we Americans carry.
