The ATM Industry Association has issued a call for ATM deployers to begin planning as soon as possible for migration to the Windows 10 operating system.
This call to action forms part of the association's newly released "Windows 10 Readiness Position Paper."
"With the first hardware manufacturer technically ready for Windows 10 during Q2, ATMIA urges all its members who are ATM deployers or operators to kick-start their migration planning immediately," ATMIA CEO Mike Lee said in a press release.
The study, compiled by consultant Eric de Putter of Payments Redesign, shows that software suppliers will require anywhere from three to nine months for Windows 10 enhancements once major manufacturers give the go-ahead.
ATM operators might need an additional year to 15 months of internal work — and possibly hardware upgrades, the ATMIA release said.
"These future timelines reveal that the clock is ticking loudly for the ATM industry in terms of getting ready for the end of support for [Windows 7]," Lee said. "A [Windows 10] impact analysis is urgently required by each deployer."
The ATMIA position paper outlines the roadmap requirements for a successful 2020 migration to the Windows 10 operating system, and describes other issues to be considered, as well.
The paper includes a table — intended for use by deployers, suppliers and manufacturers — that indicates the state of readiness for Windows 10 migration. Anticipated timelines, practical guidelines and recommended actions are included, as well.
"Long-term planning saves costs, reduces security risks arising from the end of support for the obsolete operating system, and results in a smoother deployment of the new operating system," Lee said. "ATMIA wishes all its global members an optimal future migration."
Members can download the new position paper from the ATMIA market intelligence. Additionally, ATMIA will host an April 20 webinar on Windows 10 readiness to provide additional help and information to members planning the migration to the new OS.
The ATM Industry Association, founded in 1997, is a global non-profit trade association with over 10,500 members in 65 countries. The membership base covers the full range of this worldwide industry comprising over 2.2 million installed ATMs.
