TMD Security intros new card-reader security

May 8, 2006

CURACAO, Netherlands Antilles - TMD Security announced in a news release the launch of its CPK+ Model 3, a new product that protects dip card-readers from card-skimming schemes. (Read more about ATM security.)

According to a news release, the CPK+ 3 solution detects skimming devices and protects consumer card-data from being skimmed. TMD introduced the technology in March at CeBIT Hannover, Germany.

As dip card-readers continue to gain share in South America, North America and Latin America, criminals' attempts to skim card information at these readers will become more sophisticated, TMD said. Detection products have benefits when used on motorized readers, because ATMs can be taken offline until the detected skimming device is removed. On ATMs with manual readers like the dip, however, detection offers no benefit.

"Even if the terminal is 'brought down,' the customer can still insert the card and the data can still be skimmed," TMD security and logistics support specialist Cees Heuker of Hoek said.
