Threshold Electronics to deploy 800 ATMs at Canadian drug stores

August 13, 2002

TORONTO -- Threshold Electronics Limited, which provides outsourced transaction switching, ATM management services and turnkey ATM programs to financial institutions and retailers, says it has a new contract to install ATMs into a national network of 800-plus retail drug stores.

Web-capable Wincor Nixdorf ATMs, supplied by IBM Canada Limited, will be deployed throughout Canada in the Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix (Quebec) chain of stores, starting in September. The installation is expected to be largely complete by the second quarter 2003.

This agreement represents the single largest ATM roll-out in Canada to date by a private-label deployer, according to a news release.

According to Matthew McIver, president of Threshold Electronics Limited, his company has invested heavily in technology, for instance using Mosaic Software's Postilion switching platform to facilitate advanced-function transactions not typically achievable on legacy ATM networks.

"Our proven operations experience, advanced switching technology and superior development will make this one of the most sophisticated networks in Canada," McIver said.

In addition to dispensing cash, the ATMs will ultimately support a loyalty program application, according to the release.
