Last week in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the State Bank of India launched its 15th fully automated branch.
According to a report by The Hindu, SBI customers can use kiosks installed at the branch to open bank accounts, make deposits and withdrawals, print ATM cards and update passbooks.
"Automated" isn't necessarily synonymous with "unattended," however. The Hindu said that SBI staff would be available on site to assist customers as they become familiar with the self-service devices in the branch.
"Everyone is not tech-savvy," B. Ramesh Babu, SBI Chief General Manager for the Chennai area, told The Hindu. "We are providing manual support too, until such customers are ready to operate on their own."
