SINGAPORE -- Five Singapore public transport operators, covering
buses and the country's mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rapid transit (LRT) operations, will develop an integrated, nation-wide smart card system for use by the nation's traveling public by 2002.
An initial 22,000 smart card readers and 5 million reloadable smart cards have been commissioned for installation on the country's MRT, LRT and 3,750 buses.
The smart card fare collection system will enable travelers to load money onto their smart cards. When using public transport they will flash the card in front of the reader, which will deduct the appropriate fare.
The $78 million contract to supply the smart card system was awarded by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore to an alliance between Motorola Inc. and ERG Ltd. Local companies Singaporean Technologies Computer Systems, Keppel Engineering and Knowledge Engineering also will be involved in the implementation.
"We are committed to making the Singapore project a showcase for the smart card industry," said Francois Dutray, Motorola's vice president and general manager, worldwide smartcard solutions division.
