Senior citizen left in lurch when Chase fails to process ATM check deposit

March 15, 2023

Mary Smith, an 80-year-old woman in Amityville, New York recently attempted to deposit a more than $200,000 check at a Chase Bank ATM. However, the bank did not process the check and held on to it for several weeks, leaving her in the lurch, according to a report by News 12 Bronx.

Charles Rosenblum, managing partner at Krohn, Rosenblum & Rosenblum, tried to get answers from the bank and said the bank told him it was possibly fraud. In the meantime, for two months, Smith had to make due without a car or money. Rosenblum filed a complaint with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

"It wasn't until that complaint was filed that they finally woke up, assigned it to someone who was able to look at it and ultimately return the check," Rosenblum said in the report. "Nobody should ever have to go through that type of ordeal by a bank or any institution."

A Chase spokesperson said it took time to find the check and that the bank initially thought there was an issue with the check.

Smith said she will never make a deposit at an ATM again and took her money elsewhere to deposit.
