Senator Ben Nelson (D - Nebraska) made comments to the Omaha World-Leaderthat he didn't know what ATM fees were because "I've never used an ATM."
According to USA Today, Nelson spokesman Jake Thompson sought to clarify the comments.
"Senator Nelson avoids ATM fees by not using ATM cards. He avoids credit card interest by paying his bills in full and on time. He wishes the federal government would do the same," Thompson said in a memo released to reporters.
Nelson's comments raised questions as the Senate recently turned back the Harkin Amendment, which would have capped ATM fees at 50 cents per transaction.
