March 25, 2010

BankInfoSecurity.com reports that breachesof debit card systems have been reported by PNC Financial Services and Fifth Third Bank, bringing the total number of banking-related data system breaches to 22 for the year, BankInfoSecurity.com reports.

The first breach hit National City customers, who are now part of the PNC network. The second breach affected Fifth Third Bank, reportedly through the breach of an unidentified third-party vendor.

Former National City debit accounts were reportedly compromised in a system wide breach sometime before the bank's acquisition by PNC in December 2008. Bank officials were made aware of the data breach last week.
