SCIL-EMV Academy to present intensive EMV workshop at ATMIA 2015

An intensive presentation by SCIL-EMV Academy on Feb. 17 will provide a detailed look at EMV technology, protocols, certification and more.

January 19, 2015

SCIL-EMV Academy will present "EMV: The Fundamentals," a workshop designed for ATM Industry professionals, at the ATMIA conference, which will take place Feb. 17–19 at Caesars Palace Las Vegas.

The Feb. 17 workshop is part of a collaboration announced last week by SCIL-EMV Academy and ATMIA to help the ATM industry meet liability shift deadlines as the U.S. migrates to the EMV chip card standard.

The workshop will be offered in two parts, a press release said. Part one is a morning session that will include the following topics:

  • what is EMV and why is it important to ATM operators?;
  • magnetic stripe vs. chip;
  • the business case;
  • EMV standards;
  • EMV applications;
  • liability shift timelines for ATMs; and
  • EMV testing, compliance and certification.

Part two, an afternoon session, will cover the following topics:

  • technology challenges facing EMV migration at the ATM level;
  • pin synchronization and management;
  • routing and the Durbin amendment;
  • host connectivity and communications protocol;
  • offline and online PIN and data authentication;
  • cardholder verification method and fallback:
  • EMV message flows; and
  • parameter updates, card block and unblock post-issuance scripts.

Attendees who participate in both sessions will receive a completion certificate from the ATMIA Academy, an ATM certification program launched last year by ATMIA.

SCIL-EMV Academy is the only independent payments academy in the U.S. with a curriculum geared to migrating card issuers, processors, acquirers, merchants and others to EMV seamlessly and cost effectively, according to the press release.

"We have built an strong curriculum designed to help U.S. payments companies and professionals transition to EMV, which we believe is the critical foundation to fast emerging mobile payments technologies. Despite the looming deadlines, there is still a lot of business uncertainty and work to be done," said Mansour Karimzedah, CTO and managing director of SCIL-EMV Academy, who will lead the workshop. "Even though the ATM industry has a longer lead time in terms of the liability shift, it also has the greatest challenge with thousands of ATMs needing to be upgraded and replaced before 2017. The ATMIA and SCIL-EMV Academy will serve as a resource to prepare the industry for EMV."

"ATMIA's annual conference is the perfect opportunity for our attendees to learn more about EMV migration," ATMIA US Executive Director David Tente said in the release. "And this format is an excellent way to expand the mission of our ATMIA Academy training program."

Workshop registration is available at the ATMIA conference website. Select the ATMIA Extension class, "EMV the Fundamentals, Part 1 and 2," and follow the workshop options.
