Fraudsters have come up with yet another way to steal money from the accounts of unsuspecting bank account holders.
According to a report by Cincinnatti.com, a new scam perpetrated against customers of Fifth Third Bank involved sending texts to account holders instructing them to link to a Fifth Third web page where they could "unlock their account."
A lookalike web page asked account holders to enter confidential account information. This information was later used by criminals to set up cardless cash withdrawals from Fifth Third ATMs.
According to the report, approximately 125 account holders were taken in by the scam, resulting in more than $106,000 stolen from account holders through fraudulent ATM transactions.
The FBI is investigating the crimes; four people have been arrested after making fraudulent withdrawals.
