The ATM Industry Association has published a roadmap to help independent ATM deployers plan for the implementation of a new operating system after the sunset of WinCE systems six years from now.
Windows CE Alternatives defines and describes the software world retail ATM operators will face after Microsoft ends support for Windows CE in October 2023.
ATMIA CEO Mike Lee said in a press release that the association wishes to assist member IADs as they begin the long process of planning, selecting and installing the most effective operating system for their ATMs. "[T]here are several critical factors to consider," he said.
The paper was researched and written by ATM and payments consultant, Eric de Putter of Payments Redesign, who presents an analysis of the Microsoft-recommended successor to CE, Windows 10 IoT Core — and the available alternatives, including Android, Linux and Google Chrome OS.
De Putter provides an assessment of each operating system against key criteria such as total cost of ownership, security, and future-proofing for the needs of the retail ATM sector.
"Independent deployers need to assess the impact of the end of support for WinCE on their existing estates, as well as on their future deployments," Lee said. "This new paper is the best available industry guide. Those who don't plan ahead for the future always end up getting blindsided by change."
The ATM Industry Association, founded in 1997, is a global non-profit trade association with over 10,500 members in 65 countries. The membership base covers the full range of this worldwide industry comprising over 2.2 million installed ATMs.
