PrivatBank prints out major savings on ATM parts

The Ukrainian FI says it's eliminating 95 percent of the cost — and a lot of the wait time — for some ATM parts by fabricating them with an inexpensive 3D printer.

It's almost like printing money. PrivatBank, the largest commercial bank in Ukraine, says it has realized a 95 percent reduction in its cost for certain ATM replacement parts — by fabricating them with a 3D printer.

An article by 3D Print said Dmytro Dubilet, IT director and CIO at PrivatBank found that he could both save money on parts and increase the availability of the bank's ATMs by generating ATM parts as needed using a relatively inexpensive Chinese-made 3D desktop printing device.

"Previously we had to buy replacement gears for our ATMs from third-party manufacturers, but now we have a 3D printer, and we learned how to print the gears out ourselves," he said in the article.

Dubilet said that for about $5, PrivatBank could fabricate a replacement gear that would cost roughly $100 from a third-party supplier.
