Poland installs Europe's first fingerprint-scanning ATM

May 11, 2010

This week, Poland became the first European nation to install biometric ATM machines that read fingerprints.

According to an article in Popular Science, Poland's BPS SA bank installed the biometric ATM in Warsaw. Customers can withdraw cash using their fingerprints and PIN codes. BPS plans to deploy three or four more biometric ATMs before the end of the year.

The machines work on "finger vein" technology, as opposed to a finger's topographical signature. The scanning technology was developed by the Japanese company Hibachi and records the tiny veins running through fingertips.
