PNC upgrades, enhances 9K ATMs in advance of EMV liability shift

August 25, 2016

PNC Bank is rolling out upgrades to its 9,000 ATMs to enable EMV transactions. The bank expects to complete its EMV migration process by mid-September, according to a press release.

"Customers will experience enhanced security with their ATM transactions due to the unique transaction code from the chip which is shared with the ATM," said PNC Bank Senior Vice President and ATM Executive Ken Justice.

Simultaneously with EMV conversion, PNC is bolstering transaction security with the installation on many of its ATMs of a keypad shield designed to protect PIN privacy.

Besides these updates, PNC ATM users will see an enhanced ATM screen and user interface, personalized transaction functionality, and the option to receive an emailed ATM receipt rather than a printed copy.

Improvements in the PNC ATM network respond to fast-evolving changes in the way customers do their banking, the release said.

PNC estimates that nearly 6 in 10 customers (58 percent) now use primarily nonteller channels to carry out banking tasks. For instance, the FI said, transactions via ATM and mobile channels today comprise almost 52 percent of all PNC deposit transactions, compared with 40 percent just a year ago.

Justice said that EMV upgrades, as well as market pressures to incorporate other advanced ATM features, could trigger a fundamental change in the ATM business. "Many of the ATMs owned by third parties commonly seen in venues such as bowling alleys and bars may go away because of the cost of upgrading."
