Pilot project uses mobile phones to withdraw cash

April 25, 2002

LONDON -- NCR Corp. (NYSE: NCR) has launched a pilot program for its Freedom concept, which uses a mobile phone to make cash withdrawals from ATMs, according to a company release.

AU-System and beamtrust a/s are partners in the program, the first done in a live environment rather than a concept model, according to the release. The Freedom concept was originally unveiled in 2001 and uses a mobile phone or personal digital assistant to obtain cash from a futuristic egg-shaped ATM.

The pilot project allows the companies to assess how easily consumers at three ATMs owned by Denmark's Spar Nor Bank and Laan & Spar Bank adapt to using a mobile phone rather than the traditional ATM card.

Customers can initiate their withdrawals prior to approaching the ATM, choosing the transaction type, amount and account details. At the ATM, the customers enter their PINs into the mobile phone, and the transaction details are transmitted to the ATM, which dispenses the cash.

No timetable for the project was released.
