Pakistani bank deploys low-energy ATMs to achieve higher uptime

May 26, 2014

In order to ensure continuous ATM availability and maximum customer convenience, Pakistan’s Meezan Bank will become the first FI in the country to deploy ATMs with an intelligent power management system.

Diebold Inc. and its local distributor TouchPoint Ltd. will install 50 energy-efficient Diebold 429 units in certain of the bank’s service areas to compensate for unreliable power availability, according to a news release.

The Diebold 429 ATM continuously monitors power demand, drawing as needed from three power sources — solar, electrical grid and internal battery. The ATM switches seamlessly between the three to reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent compared with other ATMs. The Diebold 429 can operate on as little as 70 watts, the company said.

"We are committed to enhancing the convenience, availability and sustainability of banking services for our customers," said Ariful Islam, deputy CEO at Meezan Bank in the release. "Our new ATMs will enable us to expand our reach to more customers in remote areas where power availability is a challenge."

Karachi-based Meezan Bank operates more than 350 branches and 315 ATMs in approximately 100 cities across Pakista, and is one of Pakistan's fastest-growing banks, the release said.
