NexTran intros tabletop ATM; separate safe offers added security

March 4, 2003

SOUTH HACKENSACK, NJ and MIAMI -- ATM manufacturer NexTran Industries, Inc. introduced a new tabletop ATM called ComNet 1000 at this week's ATM Industry Association show in Miami.

"For the first time, the owners of small ATMs will have the opportunity to offer their customers a wider variety of services beyond just dispensing cash, not to mention the security and high-volume capabilities we've only seen up to now in larger ATMs," said Tony Park, NexTran's chief financial officer, in a news release.

According to the release, the ComNet 1000 offers three benefits that distinguish it from competitors in the compact ATM market: a separate safe, which provides added security; a PC-based platform, which provides the ability to easily program additional services, such as those offered by larger machines; and the ability to dispense up to 2,000 bills, making it an ideal terminal for high-volume locations.

"We launched this product because we saw a need for a better, more secure, more functional terminal in the compact segment," said Park in the release.

Most countertop ATMs have lacked a separate safe, which can be a security weakness, Park said. With the ComNet 1000, the control unit is separate from the safe compartment. "That allows the machine to be serviced without having the contents of the safe exposed," he said.

Because of this design, the ComNet 1000 meets the security requirements of vault service organizations, according to the release. Park also pointed out that the terminal can be equipped with a security camera that plugs into a USB port on the control unit, like a regular PC.

The machine, which is based on a Microsoft Windows® operating system, can also be configured as a through-the-wall terminal or as a freestanding device using optional set-up kits.

According to Park, the machine is appropriate for high-volume locations where space and security are an issue, such as convenience stores, check cashing outlets and transit locations.
