TOKYO -- A total of 73,620 transactions were conducted during the week of Jan. 18 on ATMs linking the network of the postal savings system with those of some private-sector financial institutions, according to the Nikkei Financial Daily.

Some 60% of the transactions were conducted on the postal savings system's 17,000 ATMs by customers of commercial banks. In terms of cash withdrawals, commercial-bank customers used the postal system's ATMs almost three times as much as postal customers used ATMs of the commercial banks.

The average ATM handled 312,000 yen in cash deposits and 76,000 yen in cash withdrawals. Most of the deposits are believed to have gone into foreign-currency accounts at Citibank Japan.
