New video provides easy-to-follow overview of US common debit AID

The video explains how US common debit AIDs facilitate debit transactions and ensure compliance with the Durbin Amendment.

July 14, 2015

The Durbin Amendment requires that merchants be provided a choice between at least two unaffiliated networks for purchases made with a debit card. To explain the workings of this unique U.S. implementation of EMV debit, the EMV Migration Forum has produced the video, "Implementing EMV in the U.S.: How the U.S. common debit AIDs Facilitate Debit Transaction Routing and Ensure Durbin Compliance."

"The Forum was instrumental in reaching a consensus from industry stakeholders on how to meet U.S. debit requirements using the AID," EMV Migration Forum Director Randy Vanderhoof said in a press release. "Now we want to help everyone understand how the common debit AID is being implemented."

The presentation provides a simplified overview of the U.S. common debit AID and its impact on EMV adoption in the U.S., including:

  • a brief review of the differences between magnetic stripe and EMV chip cards;
  • a description of relevant terms used in discussing the U.S. common debit AID;
  • an overview of challenges associated with implementing Durbin-compliant EMV debit in the U.S.;
  • a discussion of the technical framework described in "U.S. Debit EMV Technical Proposal," the EMV Migration Forum solution that follows the EMV specification and meets debit routing requirements;
  • a walk-through of a transaction that involves a U.S. common debit AID or the Shared Debit Network Alliance AID; and
  • additional resources and references on EMV debit in the U.S.

The presentation was developed by the forum's communication and education working committee, led by Deborah Spidle, director of EMV solutions at Paragon Application Systems.
