New mobile billpay service targets cash-preferred customers

PayNearMe says its new app makes it possible for everyone — including the unbanked — to enjoy the convenience of digital transactions.

According to a press release, PayNearMe Bill Pay facilitates cash payment to more than 17,000 national and local billers by means of a simple barcode scan at participating 7-Eleven stores.

Financial services technology provider PayNearMe has partnered with convenience store chain 7-Eleven to introduce a bill payment app for unbanked and cash-preferred consumers.

Payment is completed with a barcode scan

PayNearMe said its mobile app acts as a full-service bill payment center that not only enables users to pay bills in less than a minute, but also allows them to set reminders and track payment history.

A wide range of participating billers includes cable companies, utilities providers and insurance companies, and even existing PayNearMe merchants such as Greyhound bus and Indego, Philadelphia's bike sharing program, the release said.

Domestic bill payment is the first of many affordable financial services that PayNearMe said it plans to offer to cash-preferred consumers in the U.S.

"This PayNearMe Bill Pay app is just the beginning," said company founder and CEO Danny Shader. "Cash users are largely neglected in today's bank-based digital economy. By building a suite of easy-to-use financial services that are also easy for retailers to provide to their customers, we will make it possible for everyone to benefit from the convenience of digital transactions."
